Cecil Smalley's 1991 Cutlass Calais Quad 442 W41
This is our 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais Quad442 W41. The W41 option
package was produced in only 204 Calais' in 1991. Ours is number #142 out of
those 204. We purchased the car in early 1992 with about 3,400 miles on the
odometer. We currently are about to roll over 20,000 miles. The car was
driven daily to work, by my wife, for the first two years that we owned the
car. It's now a garage queen, keeping as warm and dry as possible.
The W41 package was made to compete in showroom stock racing classes. The
package includes bigger camshafts, a low restriction exhaust, baffled fuel
tank, anti-lock brakes, FE3 suspension package, 3.941:1 ring and pinion and
different gear ratios in the transmission. Motor Trend's test of a W41
yielded a 14.7 @ 95.7 mph quarter mile time. You can tell a W41 from a W40 in
several ways. The W41 has silver striping instead of gold, a W41 emblem stuck
on each front fender, and the engine cover will have a W41 on it also.
So far the only changes I've made to the car are: Deflecta-Sheild (painted to
match) and Magna-Braid stainless steel coverings for most of the hoses and
some vacuum lines. We're still on the original set of Goodyear GT+4's.
This past summer was our first real car show season with the car. We attended
6 different car shows this past summer. They ranged from 5 blocks from home
to 200 miles away. The car was driven to all of the shows. We also managed
to win our class in 3 out of the 5 judged shows we attended. The picture
above was taken in the park of Newton Kansas, approximately 25 miles from
home, after winning our class for the first time on the 4th of July.
