Matt Spohn's '66 Toronado
I am 17 now. About 2 years ago I did lawn work for a man who collected and restored old cars. Well, his daily
driver was this 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado. I immediately fell in love with this car. Every night after the yard work, he
would drive me home in it. I got excitement out of every ride. This man eventually got me into loving old cars and
hating new cars. I still hate most new cars, they are shapeless piles of plastic. Everything about the Toro I loved. The
styling, being the first front-wheel drive (except for the cord), and the power. I never dreamed that one day it would
be sitting in my driveway. My dad is good friends with the man who owned the Toro. One day my dad pulls in front of the
house with it. I was wondering what was going on, a little confused. He came up to me and said, "Matt, if you want it,
you have to work hard and earn it." Needless to say I almost passed out, and spent the rest of that summer doing nothing
but work to pay off the car. There are only three of these cars here in the county of York, PA where I live. Mine is a
daily driver, while the others are show cars. It is so wonderful to have such a beautiful car that stands out from the
crowd. If you see a maroon Toronado here in York, its mine. It makes for great discussion in the school parking lot too!
So far I have only done minor work to her, she is all original. I have replaced exhaust manifolds, wheel bearing, and a
CV joint on top of normal maintenance. Working on this car is the best thing I could do with my time. Over the upcoming
summer I am looking forward to an engine and tranny rebuild. I have spent the last two years doing nothing but learning
the history of these cars and learning every little bit I can. One downside, I seem to be the only person my age into
these cars! Sure beats the Rice Rockets!
