Don Head's '71 Cutlass Supreme Convertible
Two years ago, I would have never thought this project to be as
challenging as it turned out. At lease in my part of the country, Atlanta-
Georgia, there is still a lot of old Cutlass' running around. Little did I
know how hard it would be to find quality (and correct) parts to complete this
car.
First things first, so we rebuilt the drive train, suspension, and
brakes. Then the under body cleaning and repair was begun. The car was taken
down to the bare hull; anything that bolted on was removed, cleaned, redone or
replaced.
Thanks to Hemmings Motor News, Ma Bell telephone, and UPS many parts were
located and retrieved. It wasn't until late in the gathering process I became
aware of 442.com, but it was very helpful finding the last few, very hard to
find parts, to complete this car.
This car has a 350, automatic, air, power steering, power brakes,
console, bucket seats, tilt wheel, full gauges, AM-FM radio, and a working
8-track tape player.
The car is finished with Sikkens base/clear system. It is the original
color with 200 grams of blue pearl per litter added to give it a slight
iridescence. The interior is done in white pearl but with blue carpet instead
of the usual black.
Thanks should be given to my wife Pam and daughters Michelle, and
Victoria for putting up with me during this project. Now we can enjoy the wind
in our hair!
