ENGINE CODE NUMBERS DECODED

1964-65 V6 (Buick) engines, the engine codes are found on the right-hand cylinder head. This code has a 2-letter prefix code followed by a 3-digit production code. 1966-71 L6 (Chevrolet) engine codes are found on the right side of the engine block just to the rear of the distributor. This code has a letter designating the plant (Flint = F), a production date code (month/day), and a suffix code which identifies the engine.

1964-67 V8 models engine code is stamped on the right cylinder head. This code conlsists of a prefix letter (330 V8=T(1964-65) or W(1966-67), 400 V8 = V), then a production sequence number, followed by a suffix eode letter (L = Low compresdon, E = 2-bbl export, G = High compression, H = 4-bbl export). A 2-letter code on the oil filler tube identified the engine.

1968-72 V8 models have the last six digits of the VLN number, the year of the block, and the assembly plant stamped on the driver's side of the block below the cylinder head. A 2-letter code on the oil filler tube identified the engine.

NOTE: Horsepower ratings for l972 are in net figures. Figures to the left
of the slash are for single exhaust models, and to the right of the slash are
dual exhaust models. All 455 engines had dual exhausts. See V.I.N. numbers
